If you are going to be staying in Taipei there are many inexpensive hotels that are not on travel angency lists. Most other times of the year I would recommend that you wing it and find a hotel when you arrive.

But in Taiwan, Chinese New Year is an extremely busy time for airlines and hotels. There is only one month left before CNY. If you intend to go, you should book now and have confirmed hotel reservations.

The best time to visit Taiwan is anytime but the summer. July and August are miserably hot and humid. June and September have some nice days and some muggy, sticky ones too. Spring and fall are very comfortable. Winter is cool at night but OK with a jacket.

The Autumn Moon Festival is big event and a good time to visit Taiwan. CNY is more family oriented and not really that good for tourists. Many things are closed.

Avoid travelling to Taiwan during CNY. Everything’s more expensive (especially flights and hotels), overcrowded and hotels are fully booked. For many people here and in China it’s the only holiday per year they have. Before or after CNY is more sane.
