I would suggest if you are not using planning out what to buy before hand or using coupons, you check out the Shopping Lists on A Full Cup. They show you what the sales are and what coupons to use with them, then you can stock up on those items that are cheap or free until the next sale. My family have saved A LOT of money this way.

$400 per week does seem awefully high. I buy mostly organic fruits and vegetables and dairy as well as other regular groceries and spend about $175 per week for a family of 4. You could save hundreds per year with coupons and stockpiling nonperishibles when they are on sale. All you need is a cool dry place to store your extra items like a large pantry, closet or shelves in a basement. Try these ideas to get your grocery bill down.

you are spending way too much on food. look in your pantry/cabinets and donate non perishables to charity. bless someone in need. money saving hints:

1] do meal planning. use weekly circular to take advantage of sales.
2] cut coupons. use them to buy sale stuff.
3] make a list. buy only the stuff you need for meals. only buy what's on list.
4] use low cost recipes.
5] buy cheaper cuts of meat
6] learn to LOVE leftovers.
7] buy the organic veggies at farmers market for cheaper price or use regular veggies and wash them well with a solution made of watered down dish soap. rinse well to get rid of the chemicals. frozen veggies on sale wont kill you. get some on sale.

8] you can make tasty pasta dish by boiling box of sale pasta(.99 or less), sale sauce(.99) ground chuck, or turkey(3.00). this makes a HUGE pot of beef a roni. kids love it! lots of leftovers.
9] make vegetarian dish, mac and cheese, tuna casserole, corned beef hash, chili with beans. oodles noodles.

I've gotta chime in here and agree that your grocery bill seems high. I also have to voice my condolences; the next few years your son is going to eat more you and your husband combined ;-)
I'm in an area with a relatively low cost of living (Michigan), and two of us can get by on $100 per week with no problems - and that includes some household supplies. Our bar bill is another matter, though.

I live in Seattle and that seems very high. organic produce will cost more for starters.shop 2 stores or so for the specials and make a menu for the week. try to buy 1 cut of meat and plan 2 different meals from it or have left overs. And I hope your cleaning supplies and personal care stuff is included in that 400. I buy at wal mart and feed 4 people and that includes all health and beauty cleaning detergent etc and I spend roughly 150/200 every 2 weeks. And we eat good balanced meals plus fruit and snacks.

Did you really keep track of all of your food expenses (and not add in soap, beauty products, etc) because $400 / wk is very high. PNW is a bit pricey, but not that much for food, unless you are dining on salmon and halibut all the time. Do you price comparison shop? idk Winco price levels; and maybe Wal-mart is not as cheap as you think. Read the weekly ads and make a list, and shop 2 or 3 stores a week to get everyone's low prices.
