IS THIS A REASONABLE AMOUNT TO BE SPENDING ON GROCERIES?

My beloved as well as I have been college students vital together as well as you outlay rounded off ~$250-275 the month upon groceries. We regularly have certain to review cost per unit as well as squeeze coupons when you see them (we’re not funny about sport them down).

Is this about normal for the two-person domicile in the Pacific Northwest or should you try to trim the fat?

When I was in college I was spending roughly 125 a month on food. Your amount sounds reasonable. I did eat a lot of pb&js but I did eat out about once a week as well.

You’re shopping right. Comparing unit price ($/oz) and looking for specials is the best way to keep your bill down. Another is to look for private lable products. Most are as good or exactly the same as national brands.

My parents spend about $125-150 a week on groceries and we’re a family of 4. so about $550 a month maybe.

I think your doing great, for two people, young people who might have snack loves, or alcohol or other related special purchases.

I dont know either of your likes and time frames that you are home and not at work, school and studying.

If your needing to cut back, pick things like, I can only guess now ok. like hot pockets that are expensive, and instead, save some spagetti sauce and a few meatballs, you can freeze them, and make your own hot pockets using toasted bread so your having a hot meal other than just lunch meat, if you get my drift.
Instead of flavored oatmeal thats pricy, make your own, by adding jam or brown sugar.
Easy things like this that dont take much effort to alter and save.

If I buy say hamberger meat, like tonight, I made half into meatloaf, 1/4 into just cooked ground beef cooked with sliced onion and green pepper *I mix with rice and season, and then a made a few quick meatballs by tossing in some crumbs, seasoning a splash of milk nad an egg.

Anyhow your doing great really it couldnt be much less for 2 people to eat 3 meals a day!

lalalaura March 26, 2010 at 11:12 pm

i think that amount sounds spot on especially for your area.If you want to trim you could cut back on things like juice and drink just filtered tap water instead.Buy in bulk sizes when you can, the savings add up.

hope this helps
Sincerely,
James

Wow……….I’d like to see a list of all you buy. Is this only groceries for supper and maybe cereal for breakfast? Anyway, I end up spending closer to $600.00 for the 3 of us……….and we aren’t big people either. lol

In May of 2009 the average cost of food for two adults was $350 per month If they were eating on the thrifty food plan. The thrifty food plan is the lowest cost food plan approved by the federal government.
